Hi Jodi,
I too am researching the Tate family - I think they originated from Ireland, and the TAIT spelling is supposed to be Scottish (particularly with the M'Intosh/Cruickshank addition). I have had a quick look at the IGI and cannot pick up births or marriages for James (born in Douglas) - also checked out both the 1871 and 1881 census- and unless I am missing something cannot see your relative. Some kind person with the resources may check the 1851 and 1861 census for you. It is possible that the parents spent only a short time on IOM, and as the IGI only records baptisms, if James was baptised elsewhere, say on their return to Scotland, then you will have to look elsewhere. Good luck
