Hello. I thought I had posted queries on this Message Board in the past, but I just did a search for my surnames and didn't find any posted by me.
My ancestor, Evan CORKILL / CORKHILL was born on the IOM in 1827. His parents were John and Esther CORKILL / CORKHILL of the Lezayre Parish, and Evan was one of the oldest of their ten children.
(I believe John and Esther were married there in 1822.)
Evan CORKILL was reported to have been a Master Mariner, so he might have visited different countries.
At some point between 1855 and 1859, he married a woman, named Elizabeth, in Liverpool, England, and they seem to have started living there at that time. I have been told that his wife might have been Elizabeth QUAYLE. I have no idea whether she was born on the Isle of Man also, or was born in England.
In 1860 in Liverpool, Evan and Elizabeth CORKILL had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth. And, between then and up to 1871, they had four more children, Julia and Esther, then the younger John and Robert.
I believe Mrs. Elizabeth CORKILL probably died in or around 1873, as that is when the five CORKILL children went to live in the Liverpool Sheltering Homes. At the time, they would have been Age 13 to Age 2. In 1874, they were all "shipped to Canada" and each went to a different home in Nova Scotia.
In 1879, Mary CORKILL married another "Home Child," J. Stanley LEWIS. "Stanley" had been born in Liverpool in 1859, and he traveled with three LEWIS girls. I have not been able to find out if they were related to him.
In 1880 "Stanley" and Mary LEWIS had their first child in NS, but in 1881 they migrated to Massachusetts. Just outside of Boston, MA, they had a total of 13 children.
One of their youngest was my grandfather, Silas "Dean" LEWIS.
I am curious whether anyone else is researching the family of John and Esther CORKILL in the Lezayre Parish.
I believe that surname is found on the Isle of Man going back to the early 1700's. And, from other Boards and Lists, I have found out that the original name was the Scottish "McCORKELL" (sp?).
During my 4 years of research, I have found the CORKILL name also spelled as CORKHILL, COCKILL, CORNHILL, etc.
Just this morning, I heard from a lady in England who came across a CORKILL in 1891 Census information, but the name was spelled CORKHILS.
.. If anyone has the time, I would like to find out if Evan CORKILL (any spelling) was living on the Isle of Man in 1851.
I would also like to know if there was an Elizabeth QUAYLE living there in 1851. I would like to find out if she was from the Isle of Man or from England or Wales. One of her daughters, as an older adult - mentioned on Census information that her mother came from Wales.
...
I also have a curiousity question. I just did a search at the LDS web site for the CORKILL name and saw that there were families living in Lonan and Onchan Parishes, etc., during the 1800's. Since they were so close to the Lezayre Parish, I'm wondering how often couples, once married, moved over into neighboring Parishes.
Thank you for your time.
HAPPY NEW YEAR !
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
P.S.
John "Stanley" LEWIS had his grandparents probably come from the Cheshire and Shropshire areas of England, and I am told that they might have come from Wales, also. His parents were John LEWIS and Isabella BURROUGHS.
