I have a Catherine Killip baptised 22 Dec., 1830 in Lezayre, who appears in the 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 census as "unmarried" and living with her older sister Elizabeth Killip, who is also unmarried.
Elizabeth died as a spinster, so I know she never married. In her will she left her possessions to her sister Catherine Killip "widow".
In Catherine Killip's own will, she is referred to as a widow.
I haven't been able to find a marriage on the IGI between Catherine Killip and Unknown Killip. Was it common to revert back to one's maiden name after becoming a widow?
Any suggestions or ideas will be gratefully accepted. I don't have the 1841- 1861 census, so I haven't been able to check those.
In case this helps, the family consisted of:
Parents: John Killip married to Mary [--?--]
- Jane Killip (b. 1819) married John Gawne
- Elizabeth Killip (b. 1821) remained single
- Ann Killip (b. 1824) married John Stowell & Thomas Crellin
- Mary Killip (b. 1826) married Philip Lace
- Margaret Killip (b. 1828) nothing else known about her
- Catherine Killip (b. 1830) married [--?--] unmarried after 1871.
Thanks.
