Qualtrough/ Moore of Lonan-mystery solved
In Response To: Re: Moore of Lonan ()

Through the means of an illegitimate birth, I have solved this mystery (See earlier postings in this thread)

Hugh Qualtrough who married Elizabeth Moore at Lonan in 1811, was actually born Hugh Collier (Cottier) bp 11 Jan 1789 Onchan, s/o Ewan/Hugh Qualtrough and Alice Collier/Cottier who later married in Rushen.

Ewan/Hugh Q & Alice appear to have had another son they called Hugh who died as an infant in 1794 (Rushen burials)

This leads me to wonder if Hugh Collier/Cottier may have been initially rejected? by his parents and perhaps bought up in Onchan. (After the birth of their 2nd son William who was baptised in Onchan just 3 weeks after the marriage in Rushen, they lived in Rushen - where Ewan eventually became the parish clerk - and had a further 6 children). This is only surmising because of the naming of 2 sons Hugh.

Unfortunately sadly Hugh died in 1816 and his wife Elizabeth Moore died in 1818 leaving their daughter, Elizabeth Qualtrough, bp 1813 Lonan, an orphan. I don't know what happened to her at this time.

Elizabeth
