Thanks Sue, I'll send off for a search at General Registry. I had just wondered why someone in those circumstances, of giving birth to a baby out of wedlock, would then want to "go public" by going in front of the church community. Would the mother have had a choice do you think? I know the offence was dealt with by the church and punishments handed out but was the mother then forced to have the baby baptised?
