Andrew, you need to get the 1907 birth cert for William Henry Quayle, if you don't have this.
It should include "Mother's details including full name and maiden name, age, occupation, place of birth, Father's details including full name, age, occupation, place of birth, Date and place of parent's marriage", and ones I have seen have also recorded how long in New South Wales, if an immigrant. From these details you can then order the parents' marriage cert., which if in NSW should include " "Bridegroom's full name, occupation, place of residence, conjugal status, place and date of birth, age, father's name and mother's maiden name, Bride's full name, occupation, place of residence, conjugal status, place and date of birth, age, father's name and mother's maiden name".
See http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/index.htm
If one or both of these certs record how long they had been in Australia, it will make it easier to find exactly when John arrived, and his age, which will make it easier to then check for him in IOM records - especially if you have his parents' details.
