Re: Surname Eggar/s
In Response To: Surname Eggar/s ()

Jane Qualtrough, alias Eggars, was buried in Rushen on January 17, 1719. A Hugh Qualtrough (her husband?)was buried on January 1, 1716.
While the exact spelling "Eggars" does not appear in the IGI for the British Isles, remembering Samantha Eggar who starred in "The collector" with Terence Stamp, I could not believe that there was no Eggar in the IGI.
I find 332 Eggar variations in the IGI for the British Isles. There are many more Eager/Egger variations, often in Scotland and Ireland, including 11 Eager(ar)s in the IOM IGI (basically one or two families). Eggar appears 141 times in the 1881 census (101 born in Hampshire!).
However the only "Eggars" in the 1881 census, are one person born at sea and a family that originated in Germany.
