I am trying to trace my great-great-grandparents who were born on the Isle of Man and moved to Cumberland, England in the mid-1870s.
I have found them in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses online but these are all after they married (in 1862) and so don't tell me anything about their parents or siblings.
Their names are Philip Corris and Catherine Faragher. Their details are as follows:
Philip Corris
Born: German, 1838-1840 (ages at census '71=31, '81=42, '01=62)
Father: Patrick Corris who on Philip's marriage entry in 1862 is listed as Occ:Farmer
Catherine Corris nee Faragher
Born: 1841-1843 (ages at census '71=28, '81=39, '01=59
Father: Thomas Faragher who on Catherine's marriage entry in 1862 is listed as Occ:Farmer
I have had a response to a look-up request from Brian Lawson who found the following likely entries in the 1851 census.
1851, German, district 2, schedule 118, Beary
Patrick Corris, head, married, 59, farm labourer, Patrick
Jane, wife, married, 57, housewife, Patrick
James, son, unmarried, 23, tailor, German
Elizabeth, daughter, unmarried, 19, servant, German
Philip, son, 11, scholar, German
1851, Lezayre, district 3, schedule 38, West Kella
Thomas Faragher, head, married, 48, farm labourer, Lezayre
Catherine, wife, married, 40, farm labourer, Lezayre
Thomas, son, 13, scholar, Lezayre
Catherine, daughter, 9, scholar, Lezayre
William, son, 8, scholar, Lezayre
Mary, daughter, 3, at home, Lezayre
Robert, son, 5, at home, Lezayre
Jane, daughter, 1, at home, Lezayre
Using this information as a starting point I then went on to IGI to look for parish records of marriages for their parents and baptism of siblings. Their are no records of a Patrick Corris marrying a Jane in the IGI from actual IOM batch nos. (only LDS submitted Patrick Corris m. Jane Corkill is likley match) and it seems that James and Elizabeth Corris were born of Patrick Corris and Mary Kelly (so perhaps Mary dies and Patrick remarried?).
For the Faraghers, it seems the family identified in the 1851 census is that of Thomas Faragher and Catherine Shimmin. I can find all people listed in the census but am niggled by the existence of another baptism record for a Catherine Faragher b. to Thomas Faragher in 1842 (which still matches the only definate iformation I have) whose mother is listed as Isabella Kinley. Do these people appear in the 1851 census?
If anyone has any information about the families mentioned in this posting I would be very grateful for it. There seem to be so many people out there with fantastic advice to give.
Thanks,
Ruth Corris
