I have located the following information from shipping/immigration information to the US...
From the CD "Irish & British Immigrants to America, 1870-1872, Vol 2":
Eliza Qualtrough, female, age 24, listed as a "wife", country of origin was "Austria", last residence "unknown", arrived in the US on April 12, 1871 aboard the ship "City of Paris" which embarked from "Liverpool and Queenstown"; the ship's manifest number was #00031829; purpose of travel "staying in the USA"; travel class "steerage".
On the same ship, was:
Edward Qualtrough, also giving country of origin - Austria; occupation- miner. Unfortunately there appears to be no age for Edward, so I haven't identified him at this point.
I am presuming Edward & Eliza are husband/wife, although I got the info for Eliza from www.genealogy.com and for Edward from ancestry.com, yet they appear on the same CD.
What really intrigues me from all this is the country of origin of both of them being Austria, yet their departure was from Liverpool or Queenstown (Ireland) Has anyone else had this sidetrack of miners from IOM (I am presuming that Edward was born in IOM, but he could be from a Liverpool family too with Manx connections) going to Austria?? Or is this a "red herring" Eliza could have been from Austria of course.... so many possibilites, but also it could be just mis-information.
Would welcome input on this please.
Thank you
Elizabeth
