I have noticed on this board and the FHS BB that some posters insist in placing as the subject of their posting such things as:
"Family" or "Family Tree" or "Ancestors" or some similar ineffectual subject title.
May I politely suggest that when posting ALWAYS include a surname or place name or something identifiable to the subject of your posting.
Also in the posting itself, provide names, dates, places and as much detail as possible. People will then willingly attempt to help you.
A posting which just includes something like " I am researching "Jones"... anyone with info on this name pls contact me..... will more than likely bring little response.
However a posting which has, for instance:
"My gggrandfather was John Smith born approx ???? and lived I believe at ????? ....
Then you will find that people surfing these boards can easily identify what your msg is about... and be more willing and likely to assist you.
And do your homework in your home country first before jumping the oceans back to the IOM. It is almost imperative to have some concrete evidence from the emigrant country first which identifies your connection to the IOM... having said that, there is always the exception, but the general rule of thumb is to work backwards from yourself/parents/grandparents chronologically....
This is not meant as a criticism but rather as constructive assistance. I enjoy assisting people however I find it frustrating doing so when there is nothing with which to work.
Thank you.
