HI Frances,
Yes I agree with you that it is more than likely Humphrey, however as I have seen no other Qualtrough called by this christian name, then I wondered if it was a "nickname", for ID purposes, for this particular guy as there are so many Williams and Johns and Thomas' during this period.

eg William Qualtrough bn1687 husb/o Mary Oates is noted on many records as Hugh Qualtrough.which can be very deceiving/confusing.. as there are a couple of Evan/Ewan Qualtroughs also called Hugh too.

Hence my seeking comments in case someone else has come across the use of Humphra(ey) as a substitute for another name....
