Re: Callow
In Response To: Callow ()

Hi

I have recently been given a copy of "The Callow Family - A Treatise" by A.D. Callow, compiled 1968.
This deals with the descendants of John Callow of Ballakeil, Andreas, and his wife, Catherine Cormode. The Treatise states that John was born at Ballakeil c. 1763.
There were no Callow householders listed in Andreas when the 1757 census was taken.
Mr. Dugdale's "Andreas Index" from the FHS Library refers to a Callow family as being of Ballathona and Bride. He states that a John Callow (1776 - 1845) was the son of William Callow of Maughold & Jony Lawson. These are different dates from those given for John of Ballakeil & Bride in "The Treatise" which are c1763 - 1833.

2 Callows held land in Andreas in the Rent Roll of 1760, but they were probably non-residents holding small intacks. John Callow held "Close e Droghad" and William Callow "Jane" held part of Ballacleator Intack.

"The Treatise" claims that the Ballakeil Callows were directly descended from the Quaker Callows of Ballafayle, Maughold, but this will require some sorting out.
