According to early records, ie pre 1730s, there are variants of the name Qualtrough which have not been present in later references.
A Huon Waltragh was owner Laxey Cottages c.1567 and is probably buried in Lonan.
Huon's son William McWaltragh or Qualteragh married c 1567 to the daughter of Gilbert McGermott who was the owner of the Mullen Vataage in Laxey. The daughter was given half of the Mill on marriage to William MCWaltragh/Qualteragh. This William died 1621, prob in Lonan. He bought Grenane, Lonan 1580 & 1591.
Another variant appears to be Colthrop/Calthrop/Calthorp a member of which appears in Devon and produces a line there. Colthrop/Calthrop/Calthorps were in Maughold in the late 1600's
A John Coltrough appears in Braddan about 1670
A Margaret Quall married ? Craine of Ballaugh who was sister to Alice Qualtrough who married William Kelly whose son Nicholas was the heir to Raby, Lonan and who saved the sheep in the snow (of the song) for his uncle William Qualtrough who was Qualtrough Raby in the same song. This Wm was married to Dorothy Shimmin. All these events late 1600s/early 1700s
Qualtraugh is another obvious variant.
Some of the Qualters in Liverpool in the late 1800s are also Qualtroughs, however these should not be confused with the Qualter/s of Ireland, which are no relation as far as I am aware.
