Sources of details of Wills

In searching for details of the inter-relationships of my Christian/Skelly and perhaps Clague ancestors in 19th Century Peel I have been trying to find out more about Cornelius Skelly. In the course of trying to get a copy of the original will I came across details that others might find helpful.

The first useful site is at http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/default.asp where there is a searchable database for PCC wills from 1384-1858 and the facility for the paid download of .pdf copies of the original wills. Edward Christian of Ballure, died 1850, cost me just £3, good value for 8 closely written pages (but virtually unreadable).

I gather that later documents are held at the Royal Courts of Justice, at the search rooms (Tel 020 7947 6000) however if you wish a copy of a will for dates not on the pro.gov site, then you will need to contact:-

York Probate search and Copies Department
Castle Chambers
Clifford Street
YORK
YO1 9RG

They will provide a copy of a will for the princely sum of £5, (payable to HM Paymaster General) although it can take up to 5 weeks I was told. They need only name, last address, date of death and any other pertinent details to make a search. A helpful answer-phone message is at 01904 666777.

I hope that this helps
