THIRD GENERATION
4. Thomas Radcliffe was born in 1704 in Andreas, Isle of Man. He died in 1777 in Andreas, Isle of Man. Thomas the heir (1704-1773), son of William and Alice.Thomas in his turn was left a young heifer and a sheep and yearlingby his stepmother Catherine, so that he would be sure to look after the sheep of her only child Charles. When William was about 60, hemade a "settlement or agreement"4 with his heir Thomas, wholost it, or, as the witnesses James Radcliffe and Dan Skinnertestified before Deemster Nicholas Christian "alledged to be missed or Lost from him." This was the customary settlement of half the lands and stock with which elderly fathers often endowed their sonsabout to be married, but this particular agreement contains some interesting details. In addition to half the land and half the husbandry gears, William settled "half his team of six oxen with the youngest of his black mares." While reserving his own dwelling-house and garden "to the longest-liver of himself and present wife", he gave Thomas half of "the Trees growing in the sogarden with as much Land as would be a garden for him wheresoever he thought fitt within the sd farm". Both father and son agreed that "neither of them was to sett or sell any Turf to any person . . . without both of them to be consented "hereunto. " By his wife Esther Quirk, Thomas had five sons and five daughters. The eldest son Philip (1728-1788) married Jane Cain (d.1803); the second son William (1731-1791) became Parish Clerk in succession to Nicholas Cowley, and the youngest daughter Esther(1748-1811) married Thomas Allen, a member of the family which had provided five successive Vicars of Maughold before coming to Ballavarry in Andreas. While the other daughter, Esther received a share of her mother's "shaped clothes" by Will. Philip and Jane also had a large family (three sons and six daughters), several of whom continued the custom of marrying members of other Andreas families such as Kneale, Sayle, and Radcliffe. Thomas the heir (1767-1811), however, married Catherine Quirk from Ballaspet, Patrick, and his sister Mary married Alexander Bonnyman of Braddan, who had come to the island as Agent to the Duke of Atholl. The central position of Ballaradcliffe in the parish of Andreas, and its close proximity tothe Church and Village made it inevitable that land would be sold for village purposes. In 1787 Philip had sold the South-East corner of Gatt ne Nain to the Churchwardens for a schoolhouse, and in1806 and 1812, Thomas and Catherine sold plots to two separate blacksmiths, James Kelly and Thomas Kewley. This trend has naturally continued, and today, Ballaradcliffe is the name of asmall housing estate as well as of the mansion-house and adjoining land. Thomas and Catherine were followed by William (1795-1833)and his wife Anne Kewley of Jurby (1799-1858). William's early death seems to have caused considerable financial difficulty, and most members of another large generation of six sons and two daughters left to try their fortune elsewhere _in Ramsey, Douglas, Liverpool and the United States. The farm descended to Thomas(1819-1898) and his wife Jane Sayle (1818-1895), and then to their bachelor son William John (1844-1916), well-known as Member of the Keys, Justice of the Peace and Local Preacher. Two of W. J.Radcliffe's younger brothers emigrated to New Zealand, whence the heir Donald (1881-1940) returned to spend his last days in Andreas. His son, Hubert H (Hugh), of recent memory, combined the two family traditions of residence abroad and public service at home (to say nothing of an interest in gardening) by entering the House of Keys after a period of service in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, later becoming a member of the Legislative Council.

5. Esther Quirk died in 1778.
Thomas Radcliffe and Esther Quirk had the following children:

2 i. Philip Radcliffe.

ii. William Radcliffe was born in 1731 in Andreas, Isle of Man. He died in 1791 in Andreas, Isle of Man. the second son William (1731-1791) became Parish Clerk in succession to Nicholas Cowley

William, second son of Thomas Radcliffe and Esther Quirk of Ballaradcliffe became Parish Clerk, thus inaugurating a period of 137 years during which members of the same family held the same office. William, who died in 1791, was succeeded by his eldest son, also William (in office 1791-1813), and then by his youngest son John (in office 1813-1858). In the time of John's son Frederick (in office 1858-1906), a diminution in the status of Parish Clerk took place, when after the passing of the Church Act of 1880, the duties became those of a sexton.

The Parish Clerks

In the eighteenth century the Parish Clerk was a person of considerable importance, being preceded only by the Captain and Vicar of each Parish. As his duties were mainly concerned with assisting the Vicar in the services of the Church, and were sometimes combined with those of schoolmaster, a man of some standing and education was looked for. Such men were often in office for very long periods, and in some parishes, for example Maughold, the post became apparently hereditary in certain families, although the method of appointment was by election of the parishioners in the event of a vacancy. Such a vacancy occurred at Andreas in 1769, when William, second son of Thomas Radcliffe and Esther Quirk of Ballaradcliffe became Parish Clerk, thus inaugurating a period of 137 years during which members of the same family held the same office. William, the first Clerk, married Margery Lace, who was a party to one of the most detailed articles of marriage ever drawn up when her son William the second Clerk married Mary Martin of"Cronk e dooiney" in 1792. In settling her lands and houses on her son, she reserved "to herself during her natural life that parcel . . . called the Flatt east of the Hill during the summer and harvest season", sharing the grass with her son William in the winter. She also reserved to her own use "the Parlour, the Room above the Parlour, and the Closet adjoining to and opening into the said Room above the Parlour, and the back Kitchen; and the last'part or Division of the Barn as well the Ground Floor as also the Room above it. " In consideration of William having half her pigs, his mother was to have "one half of a Pig properly fed orfattened . . . yearly during her natural life". Margery would provide hay for her own two cows, but William was to carry home the hay, and also his mother's "Turff" (peat) and serve the said cows in and with sufficient straw to make up provender . . . The said Margery is to have and enjoy the Dung of her said two Cows and to have a Garden made in the flats reserved to her own use unmollested." The mother handed over her sheep in the mountains of Ballaugh, and her black horse, "and in consideration there ofher son is to give his mother the use of a horse as often as she goes from home upon her Lawful occasions." John and Jony Martin gave their daughter a dowry of "£50, an in-calf cow as also a Feather bed and suitable bedding ", and promised"a dozen of she-lambs" in the following summer. Poor Mary was destined to live her whole married life in the shadow of hermasterful mother-in-law, for she died in 1809, and the redoubtable Margery not until 1813. As already mentioned, this William's youngest brother John succeeded him as Parish Clerk, as his owneldest son Lace was only 13. Lace Radcliffe farmed the family lands on part of Larivane, but his son and grandson, both William Lace Radchffe, (1822-1893 and 1863-1924) followed their trades in the village, the first as a grocer, and the second as a saddler.

FOURTH GENERATION

8. William Radcliffe was born in 1670 in Andreas, Isle of Man. He died in 1754 in Andreas, Isle of Man. Ballaradcliffe
For about a hundred years before 1679, the owner of Ballaradcliffe was named John, but we do not know how many generations are thus designated. A John Radcliffe who died in16783 thriftily left his son John a feather bed and bolster, but"only if he recovered of his present sickness." When the son John died in the following year, leaving three young children, his widow Isabel Kneale had to rely, as was the custom, on the help of the nearest male relations on both sides; the eldest son William, then under 10, received from his father a sheep and a lamb, while the two younger children were left respectively a ewe yearling and a lamb. William Radcliffe (c. 1670-1754) was married three times_toAlice Martin (d. 1708), Catherine Sayle (d. 1725) and Jane Sumpterals Lace (d. 1754). Only two children survived from the three marriages_Thomas the heir (1704-1773), son of William and Alice, and Charles (1720-1747) son of William and Catherine.Thomas in his turn was left a young heifer and a sheep and yearlingby his stepmother Catherine, so that he would be sure to look after the sheep of her only child Charles. SIXTH GENERATION

32. John Radcliffe Ballaradcliffe died in 1678 in Andreas, Isle of Man.
