I have just acquired the marriage certificate for James KEWLEY and Catherine BROADFOOT, married at St Catherine's Church, Liverpool, on July 30 1844, by banns by A.L.Townsend
.
James Kewley, full age, Bachelor, Shoe-maker, Residence: Clare St., father: Charles Kewley, Hair-dresser.
Catherine Broadfoot, full age, Spinster, Residence: Isle of Man, father: Wm Broadfoot, Mariner (hard to read father's occupation but I think that's right).
Both signed. Witnesses: William Gelling and Grace Broadfoot, who also both signed.
The witness William GELLING is my g-g-grandfather, also a shoemaker, married to Catharine KEWLEY (James' sister). There was a James Kewley 20 and John Kewley 25, shoemakers, living at the same address in Liverpool as my family in the 1841 census, #12 and #13 Wentworth Court, Pellew Street, by Coperas Hill, Russell St (reel 560). This could be the same James (though since he was born in 1814, he should be listed as 25). Their brother John, born 1808, is listed at Factory Lane in Douglas, age 33 (shoemaker) with Margaret 30 and three young children, so I would surmise the above John age 25 (and perhaps James) was a cousin or not related at all. The father Charles Kewley and mother Judith Kewley (als Quayle) were also at Factory Lane, Douglas in the 1841 census.
By the way, James KEWLEY is listed as KEMLEY in the indexes, but I was able to find it through searching for Catherine Broadfoot in the FreeBMD site and by process of elimination.
