BARRACK STREET, DOUGLAS, is a short thoroughfare to the north-east of Lord Street and below the multi-storey Shaw’s Brow car park. The Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading, or Consumer Affairs, stands in a section of Lord Street formerly known as Hanover Street, in the old Hanover Street school building. Barrack Street is to the rear of this former school and is in the old part of Douglas within a stone’s throw of the inner harbour and the Town Hall.
CATTLE MARKET STREET, DOUGLAS, is an earlier name for the present Market Street. This ran to the rear of Strand Street, from the top of the former Drumgold Street, which is now a part of the Marks & Spencer department store, towards Well Road Hill near the Government Social Security Offices at Markwell House. Market Street is in the old town and again in close proximity to the sea.
There has been much demolition and rebuilding in this area and I stand open to and welcome correction if I am in error.
