There were two Corkill families farming in Ballajora in Maughold, and one family was identified by the nickname "Dick" to distinguish them from the many other Corkill families.
There was John 'Dick' Corkill c.1715-1796 and John 'Juan Dick' 1747-1823. Later descendants from the Ballajora (Dick) family were still known by this name added to their own. Constance Radcliffe wrote "Corkill Dick was so firmly attached to this family that it was several times used in the burials register, and is sometimes heard colloquially today" [1979].
It is understood that some younger sons from this family who emigrated gave 'Dick' as a second name, because this was what they had always been called even though not at baptism.
A son of John "Juan Dick" was Thomas 1777-1869 who married Margaret Fargher. They had a son Thomas bapt.Maughold 29 Nov.1812 about whom I know nothing further. Could this be your Thomas Dick?
