Could your family read ? not that many working class of this period could - don't forget that until the 1840's newspapers in England carried a heavy tax which was partly to keep radical papers away from the masses, their audience was mainly the middle class though I have seen adverts for stonemasons in the Manx press around this period (eg to rebuild Peel quay c.1820)- I suspect that most jobs were by word of mouth - Whitehaven and Douglas had a good sea link and such 'newses' would travel quite quickly by gossip in the pubs etc - suspect one member sent for other, rather than complete family going on spec.
