Are there records available to the general public with regard to Foster Care, Guardianship or Adoption in the IOM? I have a great aunt who was raised by a (Miss) Catherine COWLEY b. 1894, in Douglas, from the age of abt. 5 years (when her mother died in 1899), or, at least, from 1900-01 (when her father was hospitalized), up until her marriage in 1919.
I have information re Catherine Cowley which indicates she never married, but had at least 2 children of her own, (they are listed as son and daughter), and living with her in 1881 at 12 St. Georges St., Onchan. My great aunt is then found to be living with her in 1901 at 9 Gt. Nelson St., Onchan, and listed as a "boarder". The aforementioned daughter is also residing with her, as well as a "nephew", and a servant.
Was it possible or likely that an unmarried woman would be allowed to raise orphaned children (not her own), without going through some sort of legal proceedings?
Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you.
