Thanks to all your help now back to William Elliott who married Elizabeth Birch in 1829 at Kirk Rushen. I have drawn a complete blank as to his origin, the family rumour is that one of our forefathers was Cornish and ran away to sea, could he be one of the Cornish fishermen off one of the Penzance/ St Ives luggers. His grandson would become harbourmaster at port Erin and then Port St Mary (also William) and when my grandfather died (Andrew)in 1955 there were very few left who had held their master's ticket in sail and steam. The Anderson link is strong and is "where the red hair of the family" came from!! Any ideas as to how I can trace William back to his origin? No success on Cornish sites but I am down there near Truro next month.
