Hi, everyone!
I'm trying to track down what became of Fanny Isabella Wood b. Aug 25, 1856 in Castletown, Isle of Man. Daughter of James Wood and his second wife,
Elizabeth Creegan.
In the 1881 Census she is visiting in Liverpool at the home of her sister Elizabeth Jane (Wood) Williams. I thought Elizabeth was trying a little match-making with her step-son Richard who was of the right age, but there are no Fanny Williams' born in the Isle of Man in the 1901 census. I then did a search for the first name only, born in the Isle of Man, as there were no Fanny Wood's to be found. One possibility turned out to be Fanny Qualtrough born correctly in Castletown and in 1901 residing in Malew. As Richard Qualtrough was an apprentice in the shop belonging to her half-brother William Wood, I thought it was a possibility. Can anyone confirm or deny?
I found a site delineating the descendants of Henry Qualtrough and Eleanor Watterson (http://www.interworx.com.au/users/routledge/henryqelinorw1.htm) Richard Qualtrough b. March 8, 1857 in Kirk Rushen to Richard Qualtrough and Jane Gawne (matching the apprentice). This Richard is listed as dying October 1, 1910 in Rushen. There is no entry for a marriage. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a retired draper, 44, living in Malew. I suppose I could pay for the page and see if he's living in the same house as Fanny Qualtrough, but that still wouldn't answer my question. There are no marriages listed in the IGI for Richard Qualtrough in any form after 1862.
These are all the Fanny's, aged 43-45, born in the Isle of Man found in the 1901 Census
Fanny Backwell 44 Isle Of Man Castletown Isle of Man Malew Shop Assistant - we know who she is.
Fanny Bennett 43 Isle of Man Derbyshire Chapel En Le Frith Living on own means - she was born Fanny Bennett
Fanny Dodd 44 Isle of Man Castletown Isle of Man Malew ?
Fanny Hamerton Isle of Man Lonan - born wrong place
Fanny Kneale, 45, Isle of Man Peel - born wrong place
Fanny Qualtrough 43 Isle of Man Castletown Isle of Man Malew
Fanny Stowell 43 Isle of Man Ramsey - born wrong place
Finally, in a letter written by Elinor Lewin Wood to Richard Qualtrough in 1895, she says "Now hoping that Fanny Hilda and yourself are in good health and with best wishes for a happy New Year".
I'd really appreciate it if anyone can provide a clue that settles this quandry. Also, maybe you can tell me if I've got hold of the correct info for Richard Qualtrough and who Hilda was.
Thanks!
