Re: Knowles/Quayle
In Response To: Re: Knowles/Quayle ()

There is a group of male Knowles in Lonan all born about the early 1800's who may have been there for the mining. The best guess is that similar names Robert Richard Henry and William were all born to a John William Knowles and coincide with a village in Lancashire called Chipping near Clitheroe.
In 1838 a John Knowles was killed when a cannon was fired to celebrate the success of the Laxey mines- could be the father- Richard died 1865, Henry was found dead in a river 1845 and william died 1869.
Richard married Anne Quayle, posibly the daughter of John Quayle and Ann Cowley, from Ballamilgin.
Richard and Anne had at least 11 children all listed on IGI but only 2 survived more than 20 years. In the 1860's 6 of them died leaving Richard and John.
Richard married Anne Kewley and John married Elizabeth Stowell and moved to Malew.
They nearly all died at Ballamilgin.
If you go to site www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/contrib/manx/index and enter Ballamilgin in the search page an interesting will of Thomas Quayle mentions Ballagare and Ballamilgin.
Some of this is speculative but there may be something to work on.
