Frances' mention of Tate family rang a bell. I have some notes on the Banks family of Onchan and the following relates to Ann Banks of Howstrake -
ANN BANKS (1791 - 1820)
Ann was baptised at St Matthew's church on 19th June 1791 and was described as "Ann Bankes (sic) daughter of Wm. Banks". As was the case with her brother Robert three years previously, her mother's name was entered as Alice Cowen. The Gazette of 20th August 1812 recorded her marriage to "Mr Godfrey Tate, Adjutant of the South Manx Volunteers, to Miss Ann Banks, daughter of Mr Wm. Banks, Merchant, of this town". The wedding took place at Lonan and a daughter Catharine was born in September 1815. Ann died in 1820 and the Manx Advertiser of 24th August announced "Died, aged 30, Ann, the wife of Mr Godfrey Tate, merchant of this town."
On the question of Ann's mother being recorded in the baptismal record as Alice Cowen rather than Elizabeth Cowen, and the same occurred with her brother Robert's baptismal entry, the following extract from an acknowledgement of the receipt of a legacy confirms that Ann's mother was indeed Elizabeth, although she may have been known as Alice, and at the time of her daughter Elizabeth's baptism, as Elinor.
"Know all men by these presents that whereas Elizabeth Banks of Douglas deceased by her last Will and Testament in writing bearing date the twenty ninth day of April one thousand eight hundred and eleven did among other Legacies therein contained give and bequeath unto Ann Banks of the town Douglas the sum or legacy of two hundred pounds british.....and six silver tea spoons and of her said Will made and Constituted William Banks Sole Executor...".
The document continued - "Now know ye that I Godfrey Tate and Ann Tate alias Banks my wife confess and acknowledge that we have had and received....the legacy or sum of two hundred pounds british....". This receipt, dated June 1814, effectively links together the mother Elizabeth, the father William, and their daughter Ann.
Godfrey Tate became Captain of the Parish of Lonan in 1837 and was, at that time, at Ballameanagh Beg.
