I have bitten the bullet and decided it is finally time to venture before the 1700s - 1720s and attempt to place into lineages early Qualtroughs on the Island and in the process attempt (finally) to bring together several Q lineages which have been created over the years and not yet linked. It will be interesting to see where this takes me as there are so many William Qualtroughs that I have been loathe to begin till now.
Because early church records become very limited prior to about 1720, one becomes dependent on probate records, deeds, property records and such like. Believe it or not, I am only venturing into this area!!
I lack the skills to read early writings and will be needing to employ a suitably qualified researcher (thankfully I know one such person) to assist in specific cases where the going gets tough.
What I would like to encourage is the sharing of family names and relationship information (with the relevant document refs) in the interest of helping each other. with this "harder" area of research and also back each other up in the interest of accuracy. which becomes more difficult to attain the further one goes back.
So I will start the ball rolling with some material received recently - note this research was not done by me, but by Nigel Crowe apparently back in the early 1980s when assisting George Broderick in compiling a booklet on Old Manx Ballads - one of the ballads mentions a Qualtrough/Kelly incident about lost sheep apparently.
Nigel's supporting research found the following:
William Qualtrough of Raby,Lonan s/o Donald Qualtrough of Raby & Isabel Skillicorn (from where?) married Dorothy Shimmin (of Lonan?) (Donald bd Sep 1677,Lonan?).William & Dorothy had no children.
William Q had an older sister Alice Q who married a William Kelly of Forrester Lodge? Ballaugh (their only surviving child being Nicholas Kelly bpt 24 Aug 1686 of De Trolleby, Marown, who inherited the property of Raby in Lonan, half when his uncle, William Qualtrough, died in 1707/08 and the rest when his aunt Dorothy Shimmin Qualtrough died, date unknown at this point). A younger sister of William, Margaret Qualtrough married William Craine, but am not aware if there were any children.
Nicholas Kelly apparently married Mary Harrison of Ballaglonney, Malew on 29 July 1712. Haven't yet checked for children. Nicholas died 25 Dec 1783 (Lonan?)
[Note the above William Kelly (husb of Alice Qualtrough who died 11 Oct 1700) remarried to Eleanor Fargher of Santon, date unknown at this point]
The last descendant to inherit the property of Raby in Lonan was a grandson of Nicholas Kelly, James Kelly Jr, who sold the property to a JJ Moore of Douglas 28 November 1823.
My interest in all this is of course Qualtrough and any descendants but others out there may link into these families or may have information to extend this brief lineage precis.
The property of Raby was a quarterland and William Qualtrough also held those adjacent to Raby of Baljean and Granane (Lonan?)

I hope it helps someone and that someone may also be able to help me further this line, both back and forth.
