NASH, HEATON JOHNSON, MARSH, LAMPERT, BEACONSFIELD

Brothers Charles Horton Nash born 1881, Charles Ramsey Nash born 1875, sister Mrs. Heaton Johnson died on the sinking of the Ellan Vannin.

Mr. Christopher Thomas Heaton Johnson aged about 35, and Mrs. Heaton Johnson. Beaconsfield Towers, Jurby Road, Ramsey. (an account of the loss of the SS Ellan Vannin passengers)

Mr. Heaton Johnson was a civil servant working in India where he had the important post of assistant Commissioner in the Madras presidency. He came to Ramsey in May on extended leave with his wife and three children. He was a graduate of Cambridge University and a member of an old Lancastrian family. His grandfather was Dr. James Johnson of Hampson, tutor of Professor Frankland and other distinguished physicists. He was said to be a man of kindly bearing and courteous disposition who had many friends in Ramsey.
Beaconfield Towers today is an attractive residential home on spacious grounds. One can imagine that in the early twentieth century it would have had sufficient prestige for a government official, with his background, to live in whilst on leave. Mrs. Heaton Johnson was related to the Marsh family who owned Beaconsfield Towers. Captain Marsh was a founder shareholder and director of the Isle of Man Bank.

Mr. Heaton Johnson was returning to Madras, and early newspaper reports suggested that he was to travel on a Bibby liner from Liverpool the next day. However, he was in fact intending to spend a week in London before continuing to Madras. He wanted to be in Wibledon before nightfall on 3rd December and so he caught the Ellan Vannin to be certain of getting an early train from Liverpool to London. He sailed from Ramsey with his wife, who was intending to see him off from Liverpool.

Their three children were left in the charge of Mrs. Heaton Johnson's sister. Mrs. Lambert.

Any Info on the above would be greatly appreciated.
