Karen, It's quite complicated, but I'm sure we'll sort it out.Michael McLeavey
aged 8 was living with his grandparents Hugh (a gardener) & Sarah McLeavey aged 62 & 65 at the Forresters' Arms Douglas, 1861 census. They had come from Carlingford, Co Louth. Michael is registered as surname Brien. Hugh & Sarah's son, Bernard & his wife Anne (my g.g.parents were living at Back Strand St.The McLeaveys were on the island in 1851 census in 13 Back Strand St. In the marriage register at St Mary's 19 May 1873 Michael O'Brien alias McAleavey of Heywood Place) (father Michael O'Brien, labourer) married Elizabeth Mary Sloane 19yrs old, a domestic servant, daughter of Arthur Sloane 19 Barnabas Square.
1871 census Hugh McLevy,73 yrs, widower, labourer and Michael McLevy 17yrs, boatman, were living at Wellington Square. Michael died 19 Oct 1885 aged 33 yrs and is buried at Braddan Cemetery in the grave with my g.g.g'parents. Michael's son Richard James and his wife Florence Alma are buried in Maughold and their children who died are in another grave John, aged 1yr, Florence, 3yrs and Margaret Alma 10yrs. They were all baptised in danger of death at the R.C. Church in Ramsey. I have details of their deaths which I copied at the Gen.Registry. My great aunt Frances McAleavey always went to visit Richard & his wife when they lived in Athol St. They were looked after by their daughter Ethel Uren. Her nieces Ethel& Alma went to St Mary's School with me during the wartime. Hugh & Sarah had a son Archibald who went to the Ballarat goldfields, Australia in the 1850's and I am now in contact by email with his descendant Lyn McLeavy of Tasmania. She is hoping to come to the island in September. I have more information, I'll look it out for you tomorrow. Marie Radcliffe
