GILL & KILLEY used interchangeably in Maughold?

I have come across several instances of GILL and KILLEY being used interchangeably, and I wondered whether anyone knows until what date this occurred, and did it happen only in Maughold records? A.W. Moore wrote in 'Manx Names' that Killey was identical in meaning with Gill, but the switching of the names appeared to happen only occasionally, and only with some families.
Can anyone throw any light on this?

Some examples: Kk Maughold 13 Oct. 1704: Articles of marriage contracted and agreed upon by William Kermeene and his wife Jony Kermeen als Cowley in the behalf of their son William Kermeen on the one party and Ewan Christian and his wife Ann Christian als Gill in the behalf of their daughter Ann Christian on the other party...
Kk Maughold May 23 1732: Anne Christian als Killey departed this life in Douglas abt the 20th of June last... the Court has decreed her son in law Wm Kirmeen and his wife sole admin...

In the Epis wills of 1720 the list of 'defunctoru nomina' in Maughold includes Alice Killey als Saile, whereas her actual will [Ramsey 1720] has her name as Aylice Sayle alias Gill, and names her children as Wm Gill, Christian Gill etc., and her husband John Gill.

John Creech married Mary Gill 11 May 1723 in Lezayre. Mary Creech als Killey was buried Maughold 23 July 1758.

The Killey family of Barony, Maughold, were recorded as Killey in various Maughold bapts and burials, but in the 1841 census the family were listed as GILL [#3 20 82 Barroney].

Thanks for any information,
