Re: KNEALE/HALSAL

The area around Lord Street included a street called Bigwell Street, that was torn down around the turn of the century as part of a slum renewal. Some of the old maps in Thwaites Guide show it. There were a number of Kneale's that lived in sequential addresses along this street in the mid 1800's. It is currently a parking lot, and located in a triangular lot between Athol St and Lord St.

Adjacent to the parking lot is a house at 7 John Street. It is the oldest house in Douglas. Nigel Crowe was kind enough to research this and a sign is posted on it. The sign indicates that Thomas Kneale purchased the house in 1844 for 270 pounds. The Kneale's kept the house until 1898. It is currently a restaurant called Scott's Bistro.
