Brian is correct (see his email) - many non-residents assume that Man is rather like England with a village centred around the church - in fact this is almost never the case on the Island - the church may be some distance from the community and sited on some sacred spot. In Ballaugh the old (small) community was centred around the Cronk (that said, most be be diffused around the parish) - served by old St Kirk Ballaugh - however the main road Peel-Ramsey moved the focus south and the new church was built about 1 mile south of the old
Erosion is a slight problem here but I think it was the better communication offered by raod and then railway that caused the move.
