Hi all - I am trying to trace some background on my grandfather, John Llewellyn Lewis.
He lived with his wife Margaret and three children (William,(18yrs) John (16yrs) and Eric (15yrs - called Ted)) at 5 Osborne Grove, Douglas in 1944 and he was killed in an accident on 16th March 1944. He was a window cleaner and the family story goes that he fell from a ladder onto a spiked railing.
I have his obit or memorial cut from a newspaper (it's only a tiny scrap so I have no idea which paper), giving his funeral date as 20th March 1944 at 2pm for burial in the Borough Cemetery.
I never knew either of my grandparents, and my father's memory is not what it was. His younger brother still lives in the island, in Douglas, but his memory is failing also. The youngest, Eric (called Ted) is still alive and living in Manchester but when I finally managed to track him down, he didn't want to know....
I hope someone out there has memories of that time or has relatives who might remember. If what I have learned is correct, they moved to the island from Manchester around 1940 - perhaps because there were relatives already there?
Any help much appreciated - I am up against a total brick wall.
Cheers, Karen
