Thanks for the information, Frances. Family legend maintains that my GGF, John James Boyde (c1860-1956), worked as:
1. A labourer on Douglas Railway Station (the 1891 census and dates provided by Brian Lawson appear to fit).
2. As a gamekeeper on the Nunnery, then a private estate owned by the Goldie-Taubmans.
3. As the horse-master for Heron & Brearley, presumably from about 1910-20 onwards. The story is that he only ever left the Island to attend the horse fairs in Liverpool and Douglas.
I thought I might be able to track down a newspaper article and photograph if he was as important as that title implies. I will write to the Library in slow time.
