The “tough time” relates to the fact that during her pregnancy she must have felt desolate. Her father and stepmother had retired to the IOM, her sisters Isabella and Elizabeth were both in Toxteth Park, married with very young children, and sister Jane was in domestic service. I haven’t discovered what happened to her 2 Manx-born brothers, John b 1837 and Robert b 1840. Perhaps the workhouse was Alice’s only option.
