Hello David, I'm fixed ok with John James. Thomas is the stumbling block for me. I don't doubt that by1840 he was dead or at the very least ran away. Maybe that is the reason I find no marriage? If John James was born out of wedlock, would Catherine have been able to name Thomas as the father and give the child Hunt as a surname at St. Matthew's Douglas if they were unwed?
