Hello Philip,
This family was from Malew.
The Brew website has quite a lot of information about Robert Brew and his ancestry written by J.A. [Alfred] Brew of London who made a study of all IOM Brew families. His work was mostly hand-written, so watch out for the occasional copying mistake when transferring his work to computer.
He wrote:
“Carter, daughter of John Bridson, and her husband Thomas Brew paid 30s Lord’s Rent for Ballaquaggin in 1705, compounded for in 1643 by Charles Taubman. Their son and heir Robert Brew of "Ballaquacking" died 1759, aged 79, and was buried at Santan. His grandson and heir Robert Brew, who died in 1760, was interesting. He became a candidate for the church and attended the Academic School at Castletown (described in Srenning’s "IOM", 1950, page 336) from which he was expelled, originally for a moral offence, but later he compounded his offence by exhibiting Jacobite activities or sympathies and was excommunicated, a very serious matter at that time (1745, during the Rebellion).”
So father and son, both Robert Brew, died a year apart.
JAB has also transcribed a number of documents from the Manx Museum about Robert Brew's excommunication and petitions.
"In 1729 Bishop Wilson [wrote]: 'I am not forward to break the bruised reed or quench the smoking flax, but bless God for the faintest prospect of repentance'. He endorsed the document 'Robt. Brew’s Second Petition Sept 1750' and admitted Robert to the Academic School. Robert was ordained, became curate of Andreas in 1755 and Vicar of German in 1758. In 1754 he married Isabella Looney, by whom he had numerous issue; their eldest son Robert was baptised in 1755, and Isabella died in 1773 at Ballaquaggin....."
