Hi I have been looking at the back-numbers of the Cumbria "C & W AS & A S" Proceedings. In Vol. 81 there was a "Note" about the origins of Whitehaven, which extracted some data from unpublished accounts of St. Bee's Priory. The records were receipts for landing charges at Whitehaven in 1516/7. This reveals paymnents by Manx ship-owners, and this gives an independent version of how Manx surnames sounded to the English ear at that time. With Manx records, we always have a suspicion that the clerks had their own opinion of what the names were or should appear like ... Here they are: John Beby; : William Makstole; William Stephanson; Thomas Makrett; Robert Smythe; Thomas More; John Stephanson; Donald Makwyn; William Maktormyn; James Makwhaill; John Robynson; Fynlavynce. ...
