This post, some 7 months ago, triggered my interest in Kewleys again. For some 30 years I haven't been able to figure out the ancestry of my 4xg-grandfather Robert Kewley (ca 1738-1816) who married Isabella Dawson in Braddan 1762. Now I believe he's most likely s/o Robert Kewley and Ann Garrett, the subject of this post. Here's some detail of this family:
Children of Robert Kewley and Ann Garrett of Marown and Braddan, married ca 1733-34 (marriage entry missing).
All baptisms are to various spellings of Robert Kewley and Ann Garrett, except where noted otherwise.
1. James bapt 27 July 1735 Marown. He married Catharine Creer 17 Jan 1764 Braddan, 11 children. James was buried 7 Jan 1794 (will extract in MNB says “late of Ballachroink but now of Douglas”) and Catharine buried 10 Dec 1807, both Braddan.
2. Possibly Robert born ca 1737? Robert is mentioned in both parent’s wills (Ann 1782 and Robert 1784) but there is no baptism for him. If the estimated date is correct, he is the best candidate to be my ancestor Robert Kewley who married Isabella Dawson 18 May 1762 Braddan, 8 children, and who was buried 11 May 1816 Braddan age 78 (i.e., born about 1737-38).
3. [Margaret] bapt 9 Dec 1739 Marown. The baptism says “[first name blank] daughter of Robt Kewley & Ann Karrad eod dei” (Dec 9th 1739). There is an 1841 Marown burial “Margt Kewley daur of Robt July 11th” which seems quite likely to be her.
4. Ann bapt 30 May 1742 Marown. Her baptism is worded differently from the others: “Ann Kewley daughter of Robt of the Braid eod dei” (May 30th 1742). Marown burial 1751 “Anne Daur of Robt Kewley Apr 14th.”
5. Elizabeth bapt 28 Oct 1744 Marown. She married John Kelly 24 Feb 1767 Braddan, abt 6 children. Likely is the burial of Elizabeth Kelly als Kewley 12 Feb 1789 Braddan. Likely burial John Kelly 20 Jan 1815 age 75 of Ballashuggil Braddan.
6. John bapt 4 Mar 1746/47 Marown. Alive 1784 (father’s will). Too many John Kewleys for me to sort out.
7. Thomas bapt 20 May 1750 Marown and buried 18 Apr 1751, 4 days after sister Ann.
8. Philip bapt 26 Feb 1751/52 Braddan. This is the first entry in Braddan for this family, after moving from Marown. He is not mentioned in parents wills. Nothing more found.
9. Patrick bapt 4 Jun 1754 Braddan. His baptism is “Pat: son of Wm Kewley and Ann Garret Jun 9th”, but it’s likely a clerk entry mistake “Wm” for “Robt”. He married Margaret Kneale 5 Dec 1780 Lezayre, 9 children. He was buried 24 Jan 1837 Braddan age 83.
10. Ann bapt 1 May 1757 Braddan. Her mother’s 1782 will says she had a marriage contract. Possibly 9 Aug 1778 Braddan to John Calow because a witness was Patrick Kewley, possibly her brother.
Note that Marown marriage registers are missing prior to the 1735 baptism of James except 1733/34. If James is the eldest, the likeliest marriage date (if Marown) would be in the missing 1734/35. However, Ann Garrett was baptized 11 July 1712 Ballaugh d/o Philip Garrett (his 1745 Ballaugh will mentions daughter Ann w/o Robt Kewley) & Catharine Crye (1739/40 will), married 7 Feb 1702/03 Ballaugh. Ballaugh marriage registers are missing on Family Search from 1731 through March 1733/34.
From MNB Braddan Will Summaries:
1782-2 E d KEWLEY Ann garrett d 15 aug 1782;ch robt,john,elzth (w/o john kelly)+ patk(+ james + ann who had m/cs);inv
1784-2 E w KEWLEY Robert dated 14 Dec 1784;Ballachroink? ;ch Robt, Ann,John,Patk,Elizth,James(exor).
The following three are the only IOM known baptisms for a Robert Kewley in time period 1690-1715 and none of them are good to be the one who married Ann Garrett:
1. Apr 1698 Marown, s/o Finloe Kewley & Mary Fayle of Ballagarrow Marown. Unlikely. He’d be 86 at the 1784 death, which is rather old. He is never mentioned in siblings or parent wills, so may have died early. Or he could be the Robert Kewley of Marown who married Christian Tear of Lonan in 1723 Braddan. Christian is probably the burial “Christian Kewley als Tear July 3d” 1767 Onchan. Robert perhaps buried Onchan 1763.
2. 3 May 1702 Braddan s/o William Kewley of Ballanard. No. He married Susanna Quay 1723/4 at Malew and has a 1733 will with a son Robert (1727-1741) and posthumous child who was John of Ballanard Onchan (1733-1813).
3. 6 Dec 1715 Marown s/o Patrick Kewley. Unlikely. He’d be only 19 at marriage which seems too young.
An interesting clue is the baptism of Ann in 1742, which says that they are of Braid. "The Braidd" (various spellings) in Marown is the home of other Kewleys, and could be a useful clue.to identify them. I've tried but so far I can't make a connection.
I'll be posting a new thread on the various 1730-range Robert Kewleys shortly.
I hope this generates some interest for those researching Kewley.
