Re: Patrick Old Yard
In Response To: Re: Patrick Old Yard ()

Donna and Frances - I went to Patrick Old Yard. I had your instructions re the location and condition on the yard. Stopped and asked an elderly lady on the way to make sure we were going in the right direction. She got in her car and we followed her. I was completely flummoxed when I got there and saw how neat and orderly the church yard was then got to the section where the Kellys were buried. Absolutely could not walk or get through the high, tough grass and brambles. The lady started helping me by whacking at the grass and brambles as I tried to step through the mess then she said - oh, here, you take the stick! So I did. Got close where I could see the name Kelly several times on headstones, but could not get close at all unless I wanted to get bloodied by the brambles. I took photos from afar, but they were not readable except for John Kelly and wife Margaret Anne. Next time, I'm going to arrange to have that part of the yard cleared out...wish me luck. Maybe a big donation will help. Believe me, your help in all of this is so much appreciated. I had a wonderful week on the Isle. Went to Maughold Old Yard and found Robert Oates Christian and his family, but, wouldn't you know, our last day there and it rained so all of the aged, lichen filled letters were complicated even more by the slick shine from the rain. I now know that Maughold is pronounced "mack holdt" not "mawg hold" like I was pronouncing it. You and others also helped me with the Christians, Kellys and Moores of Castletown/Ballasalla/Malew - found residences there, too, including one where my gr. grdma Christian Faith Kelly lived with her two sisters Margaret Anne and Catherine Price at North Abbey Cottage. Thanks again - Elaine
