the 'first' settlers were some 4 millennia earlier from evidence of cereal pollen around Lhen trench which shows such cultivation in cleared areas within a wooded environment.

The 'viking' connection is considerably more nuanced - it would appear that many of the Scandinavian influx (or their descendants) came via Ireland where many were already christianised and where the Irish had thrown out the Norse rulers of Dublin in late 10th Century - the later influx was often by back migration from the North of England (eg Wirral + York) - many of these early 'Vikings' in Ireland (+ a few in Man) were from the out Isles (Orkney + Shetland) where the Norse intermarried with the local Celtic?/Gaelic population but trade + movement of peoples between the Irish sea basin and Scandinavia continued for many generations
