Hello Frances.
I have been working a bit more on the Corkill line. In prior threads, we established a decent probability that the grandparents of William Corkill (b. 1710 Braddan; d. 1781 Braddan, and wife Alice Cannon m. 1739 Onchan) were Margaret Corlett Corkill (d. 1705 Braddan) and a William Corkill (no will). The Will of Margaret Corlett Corkill we found, and listed in it, amongst many children, is a son named William. That son is believed to be the husband of Margaret Lewney Corkill (d. 1710 Braddan). Importantly, an attachment to her will noted that “1738: Wm Corkill acks his share of £1 7s + 6d viz 13s 9d from fa Wm Corkill (thus 1 2nd child)- m Bra 17071028”. From this, we assumed William & Margaret had a son named William, that the father William remarried, and that Margaret Lewney Corkill died soon after the birth of William (her burial date and his baptism date were the same day). I checked for baptism records for children born to a William Corkill in Braddan after the death of Margaret Lewney Corkill in 1710 and they pointed to two sons named Peter & John. This then suggested that the second wife of William Corkill was Jane Crane Corkill. Her Will in late 1736 confirmed two sons named Peter and John, and the absence of a husband suggested that William was dead by late 1736. The date of the Will would also dove-tail reasonably well with the 1738 attachment to the 1710 will of Margaret Lewney Corkill.
So, we were left with the problem of where are the two wills for the William Corkills. I think I found the Will for William Corkill husband of Margaret Corlett Corkill. It is on your CD in Braddan and says “1700-1 A 10, Corkill, William [rh margin lost] d 15 Jan 1700; ch Patrick (purchased land from Mr Flecher), Thos; wife Mar[] ? als Coorled exex (to have house and leave betwixt the unmarried ch); witt William Careen, Margt Taggart.” Patrick and Thomas, amongst others, are both listed on the 1705 Margaret Corlett Corkill will. The “wife Mar[] ? als Coorled” is probably “wife Margaret Corkill als Corlett.” therefore, I am confident I have that will. If anyone has a full transcription, I would love to see it.
This leaves me with the problem of the next William Corkill, husband of Margaret Lewney and Jane Crane. I believe that William and Jane had two sons, Peter born in 1713 and John born in 1716. This would place William Corkill’s death between 1715 (based on John’s baptism date in March 1716) and 1736 (based on his absence from the will of wife Jane Crane Corkill). I have yet to find a will listed for a William Corkill between those two dates. However, I did find that there is a burial record for a William Corkill in Braddan on 26 May 1725. It doesn’t label him as a child (no child of) or an adult (no age), and there is no will for this William on the Manx CD, or Lawson or Mannincloud sites. Coincidentally, there is a burial record for a William Corkill (CORKIL, William Andreas 16 May 1725), and a will exists for this William in Andreas (CORKILL, William 1725-2 And E w 0106371).
I guess I am wondering if maybe given how close the dates are for these two William Corkills that perhaps the William Corkill of Braddan’s will was overlooked. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, if I was to attempt to order a Film for that period to see if it exists there, how would I determine what Film # to request.
