Wayne - if you have good sources for your ancestor's first venture then it seems the vicar, curate or clerk slipped up. The plain meaning of bachelor and spinster then as now was a person who had never yet married. This is presumably the same folk who introduced the English form of marriage certificate into use in Lonan some ten or 12 years before it was legally required. Good news for the descendants!
