Re: Golden Meadow Mill, Castletown

As a follow-up to the IOM FHS magazine article here is further information about this subject. The mill now known as Golden Meadow Mills was also called Castletown Mills or Meadow Mill or Paradise Meadow Mill. It still exists, it is off Alexandra Road, opposite Milner Terrace, on the other side of the railway line, on the outskirts of Castletown.

John Cowley of Golden Meadow Mills mentioned in the advert was marrried to Eleanor Cowley formerly Dodd. They were previously tenants of Kewaigue Mill, Braddan. They had ten children according to the 1911 IOM Census. Sadly their son Lance Corporal Fred Cowley of 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment died in WW1 on 8 Oct 1918 aged 26 years old. The day before his twenty-seventh birthday. He is buried in Greece.

My ancestor John Arnold was a tenant of Golden Meadow Mill. He had the mill for a number of years off and on in the latter half of the nineteenth century. John was baptised at Onchan on 28 Mar 1813. He was the son of John Arnold and Elizabeth Kewley. John married Elizabeth Garrett at Braddan on 10 June 1837. They moved to England and John was a miller at Limekiln Lane in Liverpool. After about ten years in Liverpool they returned to the island.

John was tenant of a number of different mills on the island over the years. He had two or three stints at Golden Meadow, maybe more. He died in 1882 while tenant of Golden Meadow Mill and is buried at Malew. His gravestone says he "died at Castletown Water-Mill”. The family continued at the mill for a number of years until they lost the tenancy due to a mix-up over paying the rent money. Whoever was supposed to pay it never paid it for some reason and they lost the tenancy.

Here are some of the families known to have been tenants of the mill:- Simpson, Clague, Arnold, Cowley, Faragher, Cubbon. The mill was owned by the Moore family for many years.
