Re: Wills Question
In Response To: Wills Question ()

until the start of Civil court handling of wills (late 19th C) wills/decrees were handled by two ecclesiastical courts - one nominally headed by the Bishop (the Episcopal) and another by the Archdeacon (the Archideaconal) in reality this was a way of splitting the income between the two offices - however wills are thus indexed in two places (a very few were actually handled by both courts) - the index to the Archideaconal is generally better than the index to the Episcopal and post 1700 Archideaconal wills are numbered within each book/year unlike those handled by the Episcopal court - the original card index to both produced by the Rolls office and now held by Manx Museum was filmed by the Mormons in 1944 and then transcribed by Brian Lawson to produce the composite index found on www.iomfhs.im which index he used to link to his own but mostly others transcriptions - the index to Epicopal wills up to c.1750 was redone by volunteers at Manx Museum working from the actual film of the wills known at Manx Museum as EW series of films which do` not share the same break points as the Mormon films (the order number of which was included, tho with some small errors, by BL in his merged index); the new index to Episcopal films (which has several not in the original index and also for pre 1700 includes the likely married name of any female testator is on ManxNotebook - post the early 18th C the BL composite index, barring trascription errors, is generally complete.

If there is a will which can be found on the index (and which you have linked to a putative testator by burial date and parish) then if I have not done a summary and there is no transcription on the other sites then unless there is a private transcription (for which you can place a request on this board) then you can borrow the mormon film and do it yourself.
