Isle of Man Examiner 9 Jan 1915
Advertisements have appeared in newspapers, and posters have been displayed on hoardings appealing to all eligible men who have not enlisted to make it a New Year resolution to do so at once. Evidently, to judge by this week’s returns at the Recruiting Offices, Parrs Bank, they have not appealed to the residents in the Isle of Man in vain, for no fewer than thirty recruits had enlisted in seven days, actually more than have enlisted during the whole month of December. But more are still needed. The number of recruits’ names published in these columns is 635. Is it hoping for too much in asking our young and fit manhood to make it 1,000? Of course there is one drawback, and that is that there is only one recruiting office. If there were one or two stationed in the country districts probably one or two hundred names would be enrolled. For instance, men residing in Port Erin and Ramsey would hardly care to pay the expense of the fare to Douglas and then run the risk of being rejected as unfit.
My grandfather enlisted in Douglas on 1st January 1915.
