why not see if a local paper (for Hastings) is online - the British Library digitised some local papers - suggest asking on a genealogy board dealing with the area (eg Rootsweb) as you may also find a local there willing to search microfilm copies which are those generally held by local studies libraries (tho you will I suspect need to be more specific with dates) - or book yourself a holiday down there
