When I come upon curious words in the wills that I transcribe, I normally just type them in and let the reader worry about the meaning. But I have come on one this past week that does befuddle me.
John Cowle appears as a witness or as a pledge in many Wills during the 1750 time frame. Each time his name appears the word "Arthur" is added in a position where one normally sees a place name or trade.
Any ideas? Just wondering.
