Manx Genealogy

Re: Can anyone tell me what Cronk Vane means

Most Manx place-names may probably be coded. The names in "Bane" appear to refer to a long established settlement by Irish speakers , the Fine or Fini.. This probably also has an implication of "Free". Still working on this, but I lean towards thinking that Quyne/Quine and Quane are derived from Mac Fine. Quite a few land-holders had the by-name "Bane" tacked onto their surname. Holdings of the Fine were of a distinctive type in that they had been diverted and marginalised. Eventually swallowed in other holdings, hence all that was left was the Croit-Banes, Cronk Vanes, especially Cooilbanes. One Ballabane. Many surnames are suspected of having connection with the word Fine.

Did you ever hear about the red pigs of Andreas, or the dogs that licked the axle of the mill at THE DOGMILLS.

One day, I'll write about red, black, blue, green, yellow, striped, etc along with the pigs, cats, birds, hens, dogs.

At present I working on Losht ostensibly meaning "Burned" but could well be a lot more interesting.

If anyone has serious thoughts about such issues I would be glad to discuss, although it is a bit esoteric for this board, not really family history??
