Manx Y-DNA Project

Wanted: Brews, Clagues, Kneens, Corkhills, Cowles, Qualtroughs, Quines, Kennaughs, Mylchreests, Radcliffes and others

This is just to report that the Manx Y-DNA project is making slow but steady progress. More than 60% of the indigenous Manx names are now included in this study, either fully tested or in part. BUT many others are still needed!

New insights into the earlier pre-surname origins of some of the Manx family names included in the study, are starting slowly to be revealed. In the two years that the project has been running, researchers and scientists elsewhere around the world have made significant progress in the identification and analysis of the early origins of the Y-DNA signatures of those men originating in the British Isles, and this new information is relevant to this Manx Study. So, for example, more than 100 distinctive Y-DNA signatures and classifications have been identified in men living today which can be connected with individual or groups of early families (clans and tribes) in the celtic world of Scotland and Ireland, as well as the rest of present-day Europe.

It is expected that this rate of general DNA discovery will continue and enhance the insights into the work of the Manx project during the nest 2-3 years.

However, a number of important Manx family names have not yet been included in the study and been tested – for example including:- Brew, Clague, Corkhill, Cowle/ell, Kennaugh, Kerruish, Kinnish, Kinrade, Kneen, Leece, Mylchreest, Qualtrough, Quine, Radcliffe – and there are more. You can see if your family has been included in the study so far by visiting the project website (manxdna.co.uk).

So, if you want to buy a Y-DNA test for Christmas for a man in your family, to learn more about your earlier origins and contribute to this major piece of work into our Manx history – there is no better time. The DNA testing company supporting the Manx Y-DNA project is currently running a sale on Y-DNA test kits purchased before the end of this year, 31st December. Prices are discounted by 25-30% for this time so that a Y-37 marker test would cost $119 (ca £75) and a Y-67 marker test $199 (ca £125).

Therefore if you have been thinking of taking a DNA test and/or you are interested in taking part in and supporting the Manx Y-DNA study – there is no better time to do it than now!!

If anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to contact me via the project website given above.

Thanks

John Creer
