it turns out that the problem we had on message board a few weeks ago which resulted in a very similar occurance was not a hardware error as first thought but an update to Apache (the server software) which tightened the restrictions on necessary file permissions - I agree that MT as new owners need to fix it but that doesn't stop you and Ian from mergeing the updates offline.
