Douglas (the burial yard of which is Braddan) at that time was a much cheaper place to live - and also removed him somewhat from creditors - there was a regular Steam Packet service in operation by 1839 so easy to move to & fro to Liverpool - fairly obvious place to escape to for a bankrupt Liverpool merchant.
